Adult Study Offerings - 5772

  • Torah Day by Day

Beginning Sunday, January 8, 2012, I am reading one full "aliyah" of the Torah every day. Since each full weekly Torah portion is divided into sevenaliyahs, this means I will read the whole of the Five Books of Moses, in one or two page chunks, between now and next January. To join me in this, all you need is a copy of the Bible, any translation you choose. In fact, you can just click on the links for each portion and read the text online at chabad.org. Each day's reading is a couple of pages in an average edition. By the time you get to Shabbat, you will have read the entire portion for that week. This will make it even more fun to go to synagogue and hear the reading and discussion!

  • Opening Judaism (New!)

This is a brand new program designed to crack open the texts, practices, and ideas that are the foundation of Judaism, and to offer a taste of how study works as a sustaining element of Jewish life. It meets twice a month, and it is geared toward a broad range of backgrounds. Change your life in fifteen evenings. Meets twice a month on Tuesday evenings.

  • Torah for Grownups

Engage in the lifetime practice of Jewish learning. Experience the irresistible draw of Bible, Talmud, midrash, and liturgy. Learn the Jewish art of asking questions, uncovering the layers of meaning in texts, and letting them shed light on the past and the present. This class follows the interests of the students and the teacher, addressing issues that are relevant to our Jewish and human lives. Returning and new members are welcome. Meets weekly, on Monday evenings. Led by Rabbi Helen Plotkin.

  • Lunchtime Torah

Bring Jewish learning to your work week. This group meets every other week, at various locations in Center City, always within a few blocks of City Hall. The goal is to add a refreshing and meaningful change to our work week, while making Torah study a fixture in our lives and a fixture in our city. We will begin with a focus on Midrash - ancient rabbinic interpretations of the Bible. As the group develops and interests emerge, we will be free to explore other areas of interest. Meets every other Thursday.

  • Couples Torah

Sign up with a friend or a significant other to engage together in Jewish learning. Topics for text study and discussions are aimed at inspiring ongoing conversation in your relationship with a friend or partner. Make it a date night, or just connect with a friend.
(You can come with a study partner - not just a spouse!)

  • Women's Circle

This group is open to women who want to explore Jewish ritual and tradition to reveal meaning and connectedness that is relevant to their lives as women, as individuals, and as members of the world.

  • Opening Hebrew (On hiatus this year)

After two years of successful learning, this class is taking a break. The students who took the class were thrilled by the results. They are now able to participate in services and Torah study with a new sense of comfort and a new appreciation for the nuances of the language. Are you interested for next year?
